WALLUMBILLA

A short 40km drive east from Roma on the Warrego highway will bring you to the quaint township of Wallumbilla.

With exceptionally fertile land, it’s no surprise the area surrounding Wallumbilla was once described as the largest wheat and dairy district in the Maranoa. Following the First World War, the surrounding land surrounding was divided into soldier settlement blocks.

Make your first stop Calico Cottage Heritage Complex (it’s also the Visitor Centre!) where you’ll find home-baked country treats and a range of local arts and craft. The Heritage Complex and Railway Station houses memorabilia and archival information pertaining to the district’s tragic train disaster in 1956. Five people died at Wallumbilla and 11 people were injured when the passenger train “The Westlander” ploughed head on into the stationary mail train

The Grain Shed at the rear of the complex was once used to store items awaiting delivery on and off the train. One of the last of its kind, the Wallumbilla Grain Shed is a stately tribute to the town’s agriculture and railway history.

Let the kids burn off some energy at the local pool, in the skateboard park or on the exercise equipment and learn about one of our locals on the Harry Thompson Walk.
