Hebel
The Hebel Hotel, a classic bush pub complete with hitching rail for horses, is the centre point of this small border town
Highlights
Not long after crossing the border into Queensland, you’ll reach Hebel, a small town big in character.
Originally named Kelly’s Point, Dan Kelly and Steve Hart, members of the infamous Ned Kelly gang, are said to have lived here in secret. The Hebel Hotel is decorated by Lightning Ridge’s famous artist John Murray and much of its interior furniture is made from recycled bush finds. The Hebel General Store and Caravan Park has kept much of its 1890s history and offers delicious home style meals and country hospitality. Hebel’s Historical Circle showcases the town’s past, including the story of Victor Chapman, the first Aboriginal school principal in Australia.
