The Great Inland Way calls into the iconic Belyando Crossing roadhouse before arriving in Charters Towers. Gold was found here in 1871 and today’s streetscape is a stunning reflection of the region’s history, with wonderfully preserved heritage buildings, pubs, museums and not one traffic light in sight!
The Visitor Information and Orientation Centre is the best place to start. Allow the ‘Ghosts of Gold’ to escort you around this exciting living montage and give an insight into life during the goldrush of the late 19th century.
Take a short drive north to visit Dalrymple National Park, then further to Greenvale to enjoy good old country hospitality at a pub made famous by Slim Dusty. Continue to Undara Volcanic National Park, home to the world’s largest lava tube system.Explore the rim of Kalkani crater at your leisure and take a guided tour of one of the spectacular lava tubes.
