Starting in Cooktown this journey takes you along the Bloomfield Track to Cape Tribulation.
Leaving Cooktown you will pass the glorious Black Mountains National Park. Take the turnoff on the left to Shiptons Flat Road and 4km along you will find the famous Lion’s Den Hotel, the perfect spot for a pub meal, a cold beer and a freshwater creek swim.
Continue along the winding bitumen road through World Heritage listed rainforest passing through Rossville and through cattle country around Ayton. Stop off at Weary Bay Beach for a walk but be croc-wise! The Ayton Store is the place to stock up on snacks before continuing your journey.
Next stop is Wujal Wujal, home to Bloomfield Falls but don’t go swimming; there are crocs here as well! Another great location is the Bana Yirriji Art and Cultural Centre. It is the last stop before heading along the unsealed Bloomfield Track to Cape Tribulation. Keep an eye out in the Bloomfield River; you might see a crocodile sun-baking on the river banks.
From Wujal Wujal to Cape Tribulation (30km), be prepared for steep windy roads, creek crossings, and amazing scenery. This part of the track is recommended for 4WD vehicles only and towing is not advised. After crossing Emmagen Creek, you will enter the 165-million-year-old Daintree Rainforest surrounding Cape Tribulation which is home to a wealth of fauna, from colourful cassowaries to tree kangaroos.
Cape Tribulation offers a variety of accommodation places from camping and private ensuite cabins to luxurious holiday homes. Explore beaches, board walks, bush walks, horse riding, reef and rainforest tours, tropical fruit farms and home-made ice-cream.
The Bloomfield Track to Cape Tribulation can be closed during the monsoon (wet) season, due to slippery road conditions and high creek levels. It is recommended to travel during the ‘dry season’. Please check road conditions prior to travel.
