A 46km drive due east of Dirranbandi, through prime grain-growing country, will bring you to the small town of Thallon where you’ll be greeted by the giant 30-metre-high grain silos. The breathtaking silos feature the spectacular ‘Watering Hole’ mural and are a definite highlight of our region.
The silo mural features icons of the district including the Moonie River, a beautiful sunset, a scarred tree recognising Thallon’s Indigenous community, pale-faced rosellas and a mob of sheep which celebrates the area’s agriculture. The award-winning murals, named “Best of the Best” at the 2019 Australian Street Art Awards, were painted by Joel Fergie and Travis Vinson, aka The Zookeeper and Drapl.
Head to the Francis Hotel to grab your copy of the self-guided town history trails and fill your day diving into Thallon’s early European history. Take the Old Town walking tour to learn about Thallon in its hey-day; follow the Roads of Yesterday; visit the Old Thallon Cemetery or learn about the history of “Old Bullamon”, the once-vast pastoral station on which Thallon now stands.
You can spend the night at the Francis or camp at the McGeever Recreational Grounds.
It’s a 79km run back to St George the next morning but don’t leave town without getting a selfie with the giant ‘William the Wombat’ sculpture. Here, learn about Thallon’s connection to the Northern Hairy-nosed Wombat and the need to protect them as one of the most critically endangered mammals in the world.
