Picture yourself as a competitor on the television series Survivor? Well, even if you don’t quite see yourself in the tribal council, you can experience the country in which Series 7 was filmed on this 388km loop road from Charters Towers. There are also some pretty incredible geological sites to discover, so what are you waiting for?
Start your journey by heading west from Charters Towers towards Pentland on the Flinders Highway (also known as the Overlander’s Way) and 11km out you’ll come to Featherby Wall. This mini escarpment is an important meeting site for the local indigenous Gudjal people.
Continue your travels through Balfes Creek and Homestead (keep an eye out for gold nuggets), cross the Cape River and arrive in Pentland, the biggest of the local small communities with about 250 residents.
Leaving Pentland on unsealed roads you’ll drive through spectacular country on the eastern edge of the White Mountains National Park, find the Daintrees Crater lookout and the Great Basalt Wall. Now you’re in Survivor country!
Look for the Bodella Station turnoff. From here on there are several freshwater lakes and lagoons with an abundance of bird life and 10km further down the road you’ll cross Lolworth Creek, which is a great area for camping.
Make sure you call into the Charters Towers Visitor Information Centre for a detailed map of this drive before you leave. After all, we don’t want this to turn into a real survivor situation.
