For a remote camping and 4WD experience stock up with supplies and a full tank of fuel in Injune and then head west along the Womblebank Gap Road towards the Mount Moffatt section of Carnarvon National Park, a 160km drive across both sealed and dirt roads.
The Mount Moffatt area is renowned for its spectacular sandstone scenery – think towering spires and hidden caves. Just a short drive into the park you will find the Marlong Arch and the Chimneys, being both worthy of a closer look.
A visit to Kenniff’s Cave (restricted access into the cave) whilst at Mount Moffatt is also a must. Legend has it that the Kenniff brothers, Patrick and James, at the turn of the 19th century lived and camped near Kenniff Cave during their infamous cattle duffing and horse stealing careers. They became known as Australia’s last bushrangers and their story lends a wild element to the landscape.
The area holds other stories in the form of age-old Aboriginal sites and rock art, and the open woodlands (don’t miss the Mahogany Forest) and craggy escarpments are home to diverse flora and fauna.
There is an information hut at the homestead or pull up for a couple of nights at Dargonelly, West Branch, Rotary Shelter or Top Moffatt camping areas. Don’t forget to pack your woollies – this area regularly receives frosts in winter!
