According to local lore, the first time Australian troops wore the now famous emu feathers in their slouch hats was at Peak Downs Station, one of the early pastoral properties that surround Capella.
In commemoration a locally constructed monument to the Australian Light Horse stands in Capella parklands, a striking dedication to the Australian armed forces and the emu plume origins.
Continue your historical exploration with a wander down Capella’s main street where murals painted on 30 light poles and walls tell the story of the town’s origins.
Then make you way to Capella Pioneer Village to explore the Central Queensland Highlands’ agricultural and pastoral heritage. More than 5,000 items, spread across 17 buildings, are waiting for you to discover. The village features the 1869 Peak Downs Homestead, Australia’s largest restored drop-plank (no nails) homestead.
Stepping back in time in Capella is not complete without seeing the historic railway station and the 95-year-old wood fired oven on display in the main street.
