Welcome to the Great Inland Way, the ultimate Aussie road trip. Beginning in Orange in NSW (making it easily accessible to all southern capital cities) and ending in QLD’s tropical north at Cooktown, this 3000km drive wanders through some of Australia’s most spectacular country. Need some convincing? Here are 7 reasons why you should come and say g’day:
- Escape the crowds – sure you could put the foot down and follow the coast road, but the Great Inland Way is quicker! And there are fewer towns and fewer people meaning less traffic and you can arrive at your destination relaxed and ready to explore.
- Soak in an outdoor hot tub – the Great Artesian Basin underlies a lot of our area and that means hot water on tap. Soak under the stars in therapeutic 40o waters in places like Burren Junction, Walgett, Lightning Ridge and St George. Ah spa, indeed.
- Experience life over the big hill – sure, you might be used to your cities and busy coastal towns but get over that big hill of the Great Dividing Range and you’ll find the real rural Australia and everything from large modern towns like Dubbo and Emerald to the tiny outpost of Hebel – where there’s a pub and a shop.
- It’s a quick way to the Outback – let me guess, you’ve always wanted to go to the Outback but where is it? Let the Great Inland Way take you there, traversing Outback QLD with its rugged ranges and open plains, the gateway to the deserts and dunes beyond.
- Its full sealed – yep, you read that right. 3000km of bitumen and you know the best part? Sometimes you’ll be the only car on the road. Those of you craving off-road adventure will find plenty of side-trips to get you off the tar and onto the gravel.
- Strike it rich – when it comes to fossicking for gemstones there’s probably not another drive in Australia that comes close to the Great Inland Way. Start your quest for riches at Lightning Ridge, home of the famed Black Opal, head north to the Central Queensland Gemfields for sapphires and rubies and find your very own gold nugget at Clermont.
- Party On – come and see how we party out here in the country. There is just about every horse sport imaginable, traditional agricultural shows, food and wines degustations, music for every taste, heaps of Easter Festivals and even mud trials. No idea what a mud trial is? Oh, are you in for an education.
